Every creator does it. You post a video, and for the next few hours, you obsessively refresh the page, watching the view count and the number of likes go up.
A thousand views! Ten thousand! You get a rush of validation.
But what if I told you that for measuring the true health of your account, likes and views are almost useless? They are vanity metrics. They feel good, but they don’t tell you why a video is succeeding or failing. They don’t provide a roadmap to repeat your success. The creators who build sustainable businesses on TikTok aren’t watching their likes; they’re focusing on three other, much more important numbers.
These are the metrics that reveal whether you’re just getting lucky or genuinely building a brand.
Metric 1: Average Watch Time
This is the single most important metric on your entire account.
Average watch time tells you how long, on average, people are watching your video before scrolling away. It is the algorithm’s #1 indicator of quality. A long watch time tells TikTok, “This video is so good, it’s holding people’s attention. We should show it to more people.”
Where to find it: Go to a video, tap the three dots, select “Analytics.”
What it means:
- If your 20-second video has an average watch time of 5 seconds: Your hook failed. The first few seconds didn’t grab the viewer, and they left.
- If your 20-second video has an average watch time of 19 seconds: You have a masterpiece. You hooked the viewer, delivered on your promise, and kept them engaged until the very end. The algorithm will love this.
Your Goal: Get the average watch time as close to the total video length as possible. If you improve this one number, your views will follow.

Metric 2: “For You” Page Percentage
This metric reveals how well your content is resonating with a new audience. It shows you what percentage of your total views came from the “For You Page” versus from your existing followers or profile views.
Where to find it: In the analytics for an individual video, under “Traffic Sources.”
What it means:
- A low FYP percentage (e.g., 20%): Your video is mostly being seen by your current followers. It’s not breaking out to a wider audience. This could mean your topic is too niche or your hooks aren’t strong enough to capture strangers.
- A high FYP percentage (e.g., 90%+): Congratulations, you’ve gone viral! This means TikTok is confident that your video is high-quality and is actively pushing it to millions of new users who have never seen your content before.
Your Goal: Consistently achieve a high “For You” Page percentage. This is the sign of true, scalable growth.
Metric 3: Follower Activity
This is the easiest win on the entire platform, yet most creators ignore it. This graph shows you the exact hours and days your followers are most active on TikTok.
Where to find it: Go to your main profile Analytics → “Followers” tab → scroll to the bottom.
What it means: It’s a literal cheat sheet telling you the best time to post. Posting when your audience is most active gives your video an initial burst of engagement from your loyal followers. This early engagement signals to the algorithm that the video is good, increasing its chances of being pushed to the “For You Page.”
Your Goal: Look at the graph and find the peak hour (e.g., 8 PM). Schedule your posts for that time to maximize your initial reach.
You’re Speaking the Algorithm’s Language
When you stop focusing on likes and start focusing on Average Watch Time, FYP Percentage, and Follower Activity, you stop guessing and start strategizing. You’re no longer just a creator; you’re an analyst who understands the language of the platform.
Knowing what these metrics mean is the first step. Knowing how to create content that systematically improves them is the secret to building a real business.
